UEFT Symposium in English

Dear friends and colleagues,

“The Land of the Thousand Lakes” as Finland is called, is pleased to extend a most cordial welcome to you to the 28th UEFT Symposium scheduled to take place in the Finnish capital Helsinki from 15 -19 September 2007. Together with our member organisation Suomen Jalkapallovalmentajat (SJV), the Finnish Football Association Suomen Palloliitto (SPL) and, once again, generously supported by UEFA and FIFA, we expect some 200 football coaches from more than 60 countries.
There will be two jubilees to be celebrated 2007 which turned the scale pro Helsinki when we had to decide on the location. First, the 30th birthday of our member organisation SJV and second, the 100th anniversary of the Finnish FA. All Symposium attendees are most cordially invited to their jubilee ceremony in the evening of 18 September. Special guests of honour will be Joseph S. Blatter, President of FIFA, and the newly-elected UEFA President, Michel Platini.

This year’s motto will be “The Role of the Coach -Lessons from the Top”
A theme which is targeted especially to all ambitious coaches. We again offer you best-practice examples by top coaches which can be applied to the other levels of the game. UEFA’s Technical Director Andy Roxburgh, a top-level national coach for many years, will be the keynote speaker on this subject. A keen observer and analyst of the work done by top coaches from Europe and beyond, he is as up-to-date as can be on issues from coaching methods to team building to leadership, and will be pleased to share “the secrets of success”.
English-born Roy Hodgson, Head Coach of the Finnish National “A” Team will be interviewed by UEFT President Dr. Jozef Vengloš about his rich and broad field of experience as a club coach (Inter Milan, Blackburn Rovers, Grashoppers Zurich, Viking Stavanger, to name but a few) as well as a coach of a national squad (in 1994 he led the Swiss Team to the FIFA World-Cup in the USA and two years later to the European Championship in England). Like Roy Hodgson, Jozef Vengloš has coached top club and national teams on almost every continent.
Lars Lagerbäck (tbc), Head Coach of the Swedish National “A” Team, and Tommy Wilson - U 20 National Coach of Scotland and a Glasgow Rangers coaching staff member - will complete this chapter demonstrating their profound experience and respective points of view.
Finally, Jorge Bernardo Griffa from Argentina will provide us with an insight into the Latin-American way of searching, selecting and developing young talent from grassroots to top level. A former national player for his native country and a professional for, amongst others, Atlético Madrid and Espanyol Barcelona, he can now look back on 35 years’ successful work with young players, many of whom went on to become celebrities in South-American or even world football.
The second major topic is entitled “The Nordic Way”: In a kind of “co-production”, the five Scandinavian countries Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden will present both their own talent promotion strategies and the great potential that lies in pooling efforts and resources, with a view to improving standards all round. Could this be the way forward for other national associations, as well?
Practical demonstrations are prepared by National Team Coaches and Heads of Coach Education of the five countries involved.
All presentations will be given in the Scandic Continental congress hotel, while the Finnair Stadium, completed only in 2000 and situated less than one kilometre off, will be the venue for the hands-on (or feet-on, rather) program.
And last but not least, our hosts will be keen to give us a taste of the cultural and historic treasures of “their” charming capital – yet another reason to join us in Helsinki. We look forward to meeting you on 15 September 2007!
